You didn't say whether it is type 1 or type 2 diabetes, which makes a big difference. Diet is helpful with both kinds, but type 2 diabetes can be cured by eating right.

Go to youtube.com and type in Neal Barnard Program For Reversing Diabetes.

Neal Barnard is a doctor of medicine who teaches at George Washington University in Washington, DC.

I am a complete normal person who happens to have diabetes type 2!! I don't let it stop me from doing anything and everything I want to do.

Eat LOW carbohydrate food plan, the lower the better so less injected instant insulin is needed.
Exercise regularly even if it is only walking as fast as one can for an hour EVERY day.
Take meds on regular schedule!! The closer to the hour the better most of the meds work, except for instant insulin which is just before each major meal.

I would have hoped that your physician would have helped you with the answer to your questions. But sometimes the best information comes from another diabetic.

I have been a diabetic, Type 1, for 10 years. I had to learn everything on my own. I'll gladly share with you what I have learned.

You did not mention if you were a type 1 or type 2 diabetic. But in either case, dietary intake can have a tremendous effect on how well your sugars are controlled. Limiting your carbohydrate (CHO) intake to approx 40 grams per meal should be about right. Avoid the "white carbs" like white processed flour, white potatoes, white rice, white sugar and white pasta. Whole wheat products are better - the more twigs and seeds in the bread, the better. CHO breakdown begins as soon as food goes in the mouth - that's what saliva is for is to begin the digestion process. The more husks and kernals in the product you eat, the longer it takes to break down - therefore you will not see a rapid rise in blood sugar levels.

The BEST reference material I can suggest to you is one written by Kalorie King - you can find it on Amazon - it is a nice book you can carry with you that lists the calories, fat and CARB COUNT of every food known to man. The back of the book has fast food restaraunts listed and carb counts for their menu items. That way, if your buddies want to go to McDonalds for lunch, you can get a grilled chicken ranch salad and only consume 3 gm of carbs! If you are craving pizza, just eat the toppings and avoid the bread altogether. The book costs about $8-9 and I get a new one every few years.

Stick with it - having diabetes sucks but take the attitude you are not going to let it control you - YOU are going to control IT!
Good Luck
